AT&T (T): Convergence Cash Engine Meets Spectrum Leverage Test

AT&T is no longer arguing that it is a media company that happens to own pipes. The second-quarter print is the cleanest evidence yet that the Dallas carrier is a fiber-and-wireless consolidator harvesting scale after years of asset sales. The remaining debate is whether that harvest survives a $23 billion spectrum check and a satellite scare that has already compressed the multiple. Chairman John Stankey used the quarter to accelerate planned share repurchases toward $10 billion for the year. That capital-return signal only works if free cash flow stays near the full-year floor after EchoStar closes.

The operating engine is Advanced Connectivity, the recast segment that now houses domestic next-generation wireless, fiber, and fixed wireless after the first-quarter reporting change. Service revenue in that book rose 5.1 percent while consolidated sales barely outran inflation. That gap is the mix-shift the equity is supposed to be buying. Combined fiber and fixed-wireless additions of 646 thousand, plus postpaid phone net adds that cleared the Street, say the bundle is still taking share even after April pricing. The offset is already visible in prepaid phone losses that matched the postpaid gain and in copper Legacy revenue that fell about a quarter. Fiber average revenue per user also slipped because the February Lumen mass-markets book carries a cheaper mix.

Adjusted earnings of $0.65 beat the consensus print. Free cash flow of $4.7 billion cleared the company's own range. Guidance was left unchanged, which is the tell. Management is not treating one strong subscriber quarter as permission to raise the cash algorithm while a large airwave purchase is still being digested. The question the next several quarters resolve is whether EchoStar leverage and copper-exit costs consume the cash that the buyback and the $1.11 dividend now fully absorb.
