SS&C Technologies (SSNC): License Timing Tests a Recurring Cash Engine

SS&C Technologies is a Windsor, Connecticut builder of fund-administration, investor-servicing, and healthcare-processing platforms that sit inside client operations, and the June quarter is less a growth surprise than a test of how much of the acceleration is contractual timing. A handful of large technology licenses reset in the period, and revenue-recognition rules pull a multiyear fee forward when those contracts renew. That cash is real. The debate is whether the equity is a mid-single-digit recurring compounder whose buyback and margin path are under-appreciated, or a serial acquirer whose fastest quarter of the year was flattered by license lumpiness and two late-year deals.

Software-enabled services still carry the franchise, and Calastone plus Curo Fund Services contributed about $36 million of the year-on-year revenue increase. Adjusted organic growth on a constant-currency basis printed 7.6 percent, two points or so above what management had been signaling. Adjusted consolidated EBITDA margin moved out by fifty basis points. The company retired stock at a record quarterly pace even as net leverage held near three turns after the Calastone term-loan add-on. That mix is why the quarter should be read as a services story first and a license story second.

The other side of the ledger is capital structure and healthcare optionality. Management is exploring a refinancing of bonds that come due next year, and the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program processed nearly three million claims on DomaniRx for Humana after an early-July launch, yet it is still a trial. Raised full-year organic guidance sits at a 5.5 percent midpoint, and the third-quarter outlook already steps back toward five percent. Does organic growth hold that mid-single-digit band without another license spike, and does the margin path actually reach the forty percent fourth-quarter goal while Calastone's network adds clients rather than just deal revenue?
