PayPal (PYPL): Mix Shift Tests Whether Checkout Still Pays

PayPal is no longer a one-button checkout franchise waiting for a volume rebound. Enrique Lores is running a three-business platform in which branded checkout has stopped shrinking, while Venmo, Braintree, and consumer credit do the growing. The June 2026 quarter is the first clean look at that mix after the April reorganization. Transaction margin, the profit PayPal keeps after interchange and losses, barely advanced even as total payment volume, the money moved across the rails, climbed at a high-single-digit clip. The investment debate is whether that gap closes as financial services scale, or whether the multiple stays compressed because growth lives in thinner products.

Volume is arriving where take rate, the fee kept on each dollar processed, is thinner. Branded checkout, the classic Pay with PayPal button, grew only in the low single digits on a currency-neutral basis, while Venmo volume grew in the mid-teens and buy-now-pay-later volume grew more than twenty percent. Management raised the full-year transaction-margin-dollar guide and non-GAAP earnings guide, yet non-GAAP operating income still contracted as non-transaction costs rose. The savings program targets at least $1.5 billion of run-rate cuts over two to three years, and most of that cash is slated for reinvestment rather than an immediate margin lift. That is the tension: the print is better than the prior guide, and the P&L still looks like a company paying to rebuild.

GAAP diluted earnings came in at $1.25 on $8.7 billion of net revenue. Share count fell enough that a mid-teens drop in net income translated into only a small earnings-per-share decline. Cash generation funded another $1.5 billion of buybacks in the quarter. The question the next several prints have to answer is whether transaction margin excluding interest on customer balances can keep compounding once the reorganization charges hit and branded checkout either holds its low-single-digit pace or slips again.
