Purple Innovation (PRPL): Showroom Recovery Collides With Coliseum Control

Purple Innovation is a Lehi mattress brand trying to prove that owned showrooms and a premium GelFlex Grid mix can stabilize a business whose wholesale engine just stalled. The June quarter is not a growth story. It is a control story: costs came down, operating cash turned positive, and the Nasdaq listing survived a reverse split, while management cut the full-year sales outlook again. Common equity sits behind a related-party term loan that the midyear balance sheet now carries entirely as current.

Wholesale is the break in the narrative. Reported wholesale sales fell to $37 million, a drop of about nineteen percent, but a large slice of that decline is incremental marketing payments to retailers and a manufacturer under common control, booked as contra-revenue rather than expense. Strip those payments and the volume decline is closer to high-single digits, which is a stalled Mattress Firm expansion rather than a wipeout. Showroom sales rose into the high teens on comparable stores, and e-commerce merely ticked down after three sequential improvements. Gross margin looks transformed until a one-time tariff refund and a fee reclassification are pulled out of the print.

The residual claim is thin. Cash ended the quarter at $23 million against related-party debt of $127 million, and management still records substantial doubt about continuing as a going concern. Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization turned slightly positive, and full-year guidance for that measure stays in the low-to-mid twenties of millions even after the sales cut. The question the next several quarters resolve is whether showroom mix and cost discipline can fund a refinancing that leaves common equity intact, or whether Coliseum Capital, already the largest lender and a control shareholder, captures the residual.
