Power Integrations (POWI): Industrial Mix Carries the High-Voltage Story

Power Integrations is a San Jose analog specialist whose second-quarter print is the first clean test of whether Jen Lloyd's first year as chief executive can turn industrial mix and expense discipline into earnings that no longer need a distant data-center story to carry the multiple. Sequential revenue rose 10% to $119 million. All four end markets improved, and industrial climbed to 43% of sales. The debate is whether that mix shift is a durable earnings engine or a cyclical bounce while the gallium-nitride roadmap stays a multi-year option.

The tension sits in the gap between a healthier P&L and a still-patient valuation. Non-GAAP operating margin expanded more than 5 points to 17%, helped by a February workforce cut and a yen-linked cost tailwind that management says flips to a slight headwind in the third quarter. Inventory days fell by 27 to 265. Channel weeks dropped back into the target band after starting the year above nine. Those working-capital moves are real, but days on hand remain high for a fabless analog name and still need another half-year of grind. The shares last changed hands near $50, well below the fifty-two-week high and still implying a rich multiple on trailing GAAP earnings.

Third-quarter revenue guidance of $122 million to $130 million asks the industrial, communications, and computer books to offset a seasonal consumer fade. TinySwitch-5 is in production at appliance customers and is slated to contribute in the second half. Automotive is on a doubling path this year after a GaN micro-converter win at a major tier-one supplier. The question for the next several quarters is whether those nearer ramps keep the sequential climb going once destock is finished, or whether the equity is still capitalizing an auxiliary-power and automotive option that has not yet shown up in the income statement.
