Pro-Dex (PDEX): One Customer Cycle Tests a Surgical Franchise

Pro-Dex is an Irvine maker of powered surgical handpieces whose latest year closed on a product-cycle win that also tightened dependence on a single unnamed orthopedic original-equipment customer. The next-generation handpiece that sat on a customer product hold through much of the prior year's fourth quarter is now shipping in volume, and the same buyer extended the supply agreement through the end of calendar 2028 with stated minimum purchase volumes for the following two calendar years. That pairing is the near-term story. Capacity added in Costa Mesa and the investment-gain line sit around that franchise rather than replacing it.

The franchise is working and becoming less diversified at the same time. Medical-device product sales absorbed a collapse in repair work as hospitals replaced legacy tools rather than sending them back, and one customer still accounted for seventy-eight percent of yearly sales. Reported net income jumped in part because the Monogram Technologies stake was cashed through Zimmer Biomet's takeover, including a contingent-value payment in the March quarter. Operating profit rose as well, but the quality gap between those two earnings figures is the first thing a reader should keep in view.

Fourth-quarter sales set another high as mix flipped back toward the new handpiece and gross margin recovered from the prior-year trough created by legacy shipments. The open question is whether that mix, the contract floors, and a still-small aerospace machining subsidiary can turn a concentrated OEM relationship into a multi-year earnings stream that does not need mark-to-market gains to look expensive.
