Envista Holdings (NVST): Operating System Turns Dental Mix Into Earnings

Envista is testing whether a Danaher-trained operating system can turn a mature two-segment dental franchise into a margin compounder after the 2024 goodwill write-down. The second-quarter print converted mid-single-digit core growth into much faster profit growth, and management raised the full-year ranges for core sales, adjusted EBITDA, and adjusted earnings. That conversion, not the headline sales line, is the equity debate. The second half already assumes China volume-based procurement and a lighter selling calendar, so the raised guide is not a claim that demand is accelerating.

The mix underneath the print is the tension. Equipment and Consumables, the Kerr and DEXIS franchise, posted high-single-digit core growth and is now carrying the top line. Specialty Products and Technologies, the Nobel Biocare and Spark franchise that still accounts for most of sales, grew only a little more than three percent. Spark still posted double-digit growth, but brackets and wires fell against a tariff pull-forward compare, and implants only matched a soft elective market. A $13 million tariff refund flattered GAAP cost of sales and is excluded from adjusted earnings, so the margin story has to stand on Envista Business System productivity rather than the refund.

Cash conversion funded both the Versah osseodensification bolt-on and continued buybacks, and net leverage sits well below one turn. The forward question is whether Equipment and Consumables share gains plus the S-series implant, Versah, and Spark ramps offset China price cuts and the last Spark deferral rolling off. Shares recently changed hands near $23, implying roughly 15 times the raised midpoint of adjusted earnings. If the conversion holds, that multiple is paying for a durable compound. If it does not, the second-half guide already describes the slower company the tape is starting to price.
