Nomad Foods (NOMD): Margin Repair Meets a Higher Coupon Reset

Nomad Foods is Europe's leading frozen-food platform sitting in a transition year under a new chief executive, and the second-quarter print is the first clean evidence that pricing and factory productivity can lift the gross line even while volume is still broken. Adjusted gross margin expanded one hundred ten basis points as the company finally put a planned price increase through and kept the three-year savings program moving. The investment debate is not whether Birds Eye, Findus, and iglo still sit in a growing aisle. It is whether the margin repair is the start of a commercial recovery or merely a price-over-volume trade that keeps leaking share inside a category that is still expanding.

Retailer disputes in Germany and France emptied shelves and cut promotions for much of the spring, which is why organic sales fell even as the broader frozen aisle kept growing. Organic revenue declined nearly three percent. Volume dropped almost six percent. Price mix added three points and more than covered the unit loss on the margin line. Management states those disputes are largely resolved, shelves have been replenished, and promotional plans are being restored. The open question is whether shoppers and retailers come back, or whether private-label substitution has already done lasting damage to a franchise that already surrendered two points of category share last year.

The equity last changed hands near $11, a market value of about one and a half billion, which is a mid-single-digit multiple of the revised earnings guide after a late-July refinancing that swapped eight hundred million euro of notes into a longer and more expensive coupon. Buybacks are paused so cash can go to net debt. Does second-half volume stabilize once the shelves are full, or does the higher coupon and a still-soft unit trend keep the franchise looking cheap for a reason?
