Neurogene is no longer a discovery-stage option on a Rett gene-therapy idea. It is a single-asset company sitting in the quiet interval between a fully dosed registrational trial and the data that decide whether that trial supports a biologics filing. Embolden finished dosing in early June after management overenrolled on the back of community demand. The earlier Phase 1/2 package that justified that trial now shows every treated participant improving on the clinician impression scale and gaining at least one developmental milestone. The equity debate is whether those open-label gains survive a larger, still uncontrolled registrational design, and whether the company reaches that readout with a clean safety file and a manufacturing package ready for review.
The financing that followed the June data is the other half of the setup. A July follow-on brought in about $135 million of net proceeds. The deal priced at $30 a share. Pro forma cash rose to roughly $360 million. Management now guides runway into early 2029. That raise bought a path through Embolden topline and the first stretch of launch preparation without another trip to the equity window. It also reset the share count and locked in dilution at a price the market has since given back. The cash now funds a waiting period, not a new experiment, while general and administrative spend is already climbing on pre-commercial work and a one-time performance-award catch-up.
Second-quarter economics already show the cost of that posture. Research and development rose to $25 million. That compared with $19 million a year earlier as Embolden dosing and manufacturing qualification absorbed more spend. The operating loss widened versus the year-ago quarter. Taysha Gene Therapies is running a parallel Rett program with an earlier guided readout, a different construct, and a different delivery route. The question the next several quarters resolve is not whether Neurogene can enroll a trial. It is whether Embolden converts the Phase 1/2 signal at a high enough rate to support a filing, and whether it does so before the competing program defines the category.
