N-able (NABL): Recurring Growth Reset Tests the Cash Engine

N-able is a channel-sold cybersecurity and IT-operations platform whose growth algorithm just reset. Annual recurring revenue, the contracted subscription run-rate, slipped from the first-quarter level after the largest renewal book of the year priced and retained worse than management had modeled. Unified endpoint management and endpoint detection, the operational fabric that managed service providers use to run client devices, renewed in the mid-eighties rather than the high-eighties, and that miss is what forced the full-year recurring-revenue cut. The cash engine did not break with the growth story. Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization still printed near twenty-nine percent of sales, which is why the equity now trades as a cash compounder rather than a software growth name.

The tension is mix, not collapse. Cove data protection still leads net-new recurring revenue and sits above $200 million of run-rate, growing faster than the company as a whole. Security-operations products that partners resell into end customers remain healthy. The pause sits in the sell-to layer, where partners are rethinking technician workflows around generative tools and where endpoint-security pricing is being competed down by SentinelOne-linked alternatives. Dollar-based net retention, the measure of whether existing customers expand, held near 106% on a reported basis but only 103% in constant currency, which is the cleaner read on pricing pressure.

The August results statement therefore poses a single question. Can data-protection expansion, a new chief revenue officer, and a smaller second-half renewal book restore sequential recurring-revenue growth, or has the company been re-rated into a mid-single-digit subscription franchise whose multiple already assumes that outcome? The next several prints decide that, not the narrative about artificial intelligence.
