Howmet Aerospace (HWM): precision aerospace supplier riding engine cycle

The story of the second quarter at Howmet is the acceleration of a single, decade-long bet that is finally showing up in the income statement at the same moment the global engine cycle inflects upward. The company closed two bolt-on aerospace fastener acquisitions in the first half of the year, sold its lowest-margin disk forging plant in Savannah, Georgia on March 31, and watched its largest segment, Engine Products, grow top line by 32% year over year on the back of a surging commercial engine spare-parts cycle. Management is now leaning into that demand with the kind of headcount and capacity additions that have not been seen at a precision aerospace supplier in two decades. The result is a print where pricing power, mix, and operating leverage all pulled in the same direction at the same time.

Howmet is one of the largest precision-engineered aerospace components manufacturers in the world, a tier-one supplier to GE Aerospace, RTX's Pratt & Whitney, Rolls-Royce, Boeing, and Airbus rather than an aircraft or engine assembler itself. Roughly 68% of revenue came from commercial and defense aerospace end markets in the first half, and the engine components segment alone now produces more than half of consolidated sales. The transformation from the old Arconic aluminum sheet business into this higher-margin aerospace parts franchise is essentially complete, and the investment case is now about how long the current engine and airframe up-cycle extends rather than whether it ever arrives. Concentration in two of the fastest-growing niches in aerospace is precisely what gives the equity its premium multiple today.

The shares trade near $255. The fifty-two-week range spans roughly $171 to $310. Market capitalization sits close to $102B and enterprise value is near $106B. That multiple reflects management's stated confidence in sustained double-digit earnings growth and free cash flow expansion, and it bakes in the assumption that the engine cycle has several years to run. The bull case is that earnings estimates keep moving higher and the multiple compresses on its own; the bear case is that a single customer disappointment, a Boeing production slip, or a commercial transportation reversal could quickly re-test the low end of the range. Trading volume averages roughly 2.7M shares a day, which is more than adequate for institutional position sizing, and the beta sits just above 1.2, reflecting a stock that moves with the cycle rather than independently of it. The dividend yield near 0.23% is small in absolute terms but signals management's preference for buybacks over dividend growth as the primary capital return mechanism, which is consistent with how high-multiple growth aerospace suppliers typically allocate excess cash.
