Hayward Holdings (HAYW): The Quiet Compounding of an Aftermarket Engine

Hayward builds the pumps, filters, heaters, automation controls, and sanitization hardware that keep roughly one of every three residential pools in North America running, and the installed base of that equipment, not the sale of a new pool, produces most of its revenue. Management sizes the replacement cycle at eight to eleven years and estimates aftermarket demand at about 85 percent of North American residential pool sales. Pool hardware is effectively a three-way business alongside Pentair and Fluidra, with the distributor channel acting as gatekeeper between factory and backyard. A small industrial flow-control niche rides on top, and seven plants across the Carolinas, Georgia, Tennessee, Rhode Island, Spain, and China make the product.

The June quarter's evidence supports the recurring-revenue frame. Net sales gained 6.3 percent against a year earlier, a pace anchored by price realization rather than volume. Adjusted diluted earnings per share of $0.26 added 8 percent on the same basis. The balance sheet moved as deliberately as the income statement. Net leverage fell to 1.5 turns, the lowest since the public listing, and the June refinancing pushed term maturities deep into the next decade at a tighter spread. Full-year guidance of $0.84 to $0.87 in adjusted earnings stands reaffirmed.

The quarter's sharpest contrast came from the competitor set. Pentair's Pool segment sank 42 percent on a core basis in the same weeks as distributors unwound roughly $170 million of channel inventory. Hayward's North American segment grew 8.8 percent in that same frame, with volume contributing 1.8 points of the gain. Stifel publicly tagged Hayward a share-gain beneficiary after Pentair's July preannouncement, and the mechanism is visible in supply-chain structure. Domestic manufacturing kept lead times short, leaving channel partners little reason to over-order in the first place.

The evaluation point is the spread between those two prints. At the $13.92 close on Friday September 4, the market applies a no-growth discount to a business printing positive volume against a wounded rival. The Pentair reset is scheduled to finish by the end of the third quarter, with Pentair itself guiding toward a healthy 2027 season. Whether that window stays contained or spreads to Hayward's own distributors is the question that resolves over the next two quarters, and the equity prices a bad answer. The good answer would compound share gain onto a deleveraging balance sheet at a mid-teens earnings multiple.
