Haemonetics Corporation (HAE): A Plasma Franchise Rebuilt Around Hospital Growth

Haemonetics enters a fresh fiscal year as a blood management franchise in mid reinvention, pairing a plasma collection business with sticky razor-razorblade economics against a hospital portfolio whose operating profit roughly doubled across the past two fiscal years. The core thesis holds that the newly signed CSL Plasma supply accord restores a lapsed anchor account to the installed base, Persona PLUS yield technology extends the company's collection advantage, and disciplined repurchase activity compounds per-share economics while management deleverages. The question for shareholders is whether that rebalancing outruns customer concentration, the leverage stack, and the aftershock of an ablation market that turned against one acquired product line.

The signature event arrived on August 14, 2026, when management disclosed a supply agreement that reopens the CSL Plasma account to NexSys PCS devices with Persona PLUS technology and the matching disposables. That pact hands a defecting anchor customer a path back onto the current-generation installed base. The defection, negotiated before fiscal 2026 began, stripped a large block of nonrecurring revenue out of the prior-year comparison and forced margin repair through portfolio pruning. Pulling the account back at this stage would make the conversion spending of past years relevant again rather than sunk cost. The agreement avoids minimum purchase commitments and leaves the fiscal 2027 outlook untouched pending a proper quarterly update. Management kept the guidance unchanged precisely because conversion timing is the customer's choice, an approach that preserves credibility by refusing to book enthusiasm as revenue.

The tension sits in concentration and in the drifting economics of esophageal protection. Customer concentration frames the risk, because ten accounts supplied nearly half of fiscal 2026 revenue and the largest single plasma buyer contributed a mid-teens slice of sales on its own. Pulse field ablation, a tissue-selective alternative in cardiac ablation, compressed the addressable market for the ensoETM cooling device behind the Attune Medical purchase and pushed management into a $77.2 million intangible impairment in the closing quarter of the fiscal year. The impairment, harsh as it reads, converted a slow earnings bleed into a one-time accounting event and frees the narrative from a forecast that the market had already repriced.

Catalysts cluster across the next two quarters. Management expects to quantify the CSL agreement's effect on its fiscal 2027 outlook at the second-quarter report in November, and a domestic approval decision on PerQseal Elite sits inside the pipeline window over that same stretch. Buyback capacity near $325.0 million remains authorized, and the redemption logic behind the convertible notes activates near mid-2027 when the required price premium holds. The rhythm of updates over that window is where the thesis earns or loses its next round of support. Each update lands on a stretch of calendar where the defecting-customer repair, the regulatory pipeline and the capital return program all report at once, so the information density of the next two quarters stands well above the norm for a company of this size.
