Fuel Tech is a small-cap combustion technology firm at an inflection point, pairing a doubled air pollution control backlog with an early-stage water treatment option just as a new CEO takes the helm. The combination of a reset cost base and a lumpy project backlog is what this equity is being asked to price.

Second quarter revenue rose 17 percent to 6.5 million. The load-bearing fact is the backlog, which doubled in a single half as utility awards landed and now sits at 14.3 million. That backlog is the variable that moves the thesis, and it sits ahead of the revenue it has not yet produced.

The balance sheet carries 30 million of cash plus investments with no long-term debt, and the next two prints decide whether the backlog converts at a 41 percent gross margin or whether the new cost base outruns revenue. The question the coming quarters resolve is whether the project pipeline earns its margin back.
