Curtiss-Wright Corporation (CW): Pivot to Growth Compounds

Curtiss-Wright enters the second half of 2026 with the strongest operating momentum of the present cycle and a guidance raise that confirms the Pivot to Growth strategy is converting bookings into margin rather than chasing volume. The company's order book and free cash flow engine are operating at full capacity. Three forces compound rather than compete across the portfolio: a record backlog provides visibility through 2028, Defense Electronics runs at a 28% segment margin that absorbs growth investment without diluting profitability, and Naval & Power rides the Virginia-class submarine build cycle alongside small modular reactor prototype transitions.

The combination shows up in the second-quarter print. Sales reached $924M. Operating income climbed to $179M with adjusted margin expanding to 19.4%. Adjusted diluted EPS of $3.72 marks the eighth consecutive quarter of margin progression. Management lifted total sales growth guidance to the high single digits, with operating margin moving above 19%. Diluted EPS guidance moved into the mid-teens range. Free cash flow guidance improved by $5M into a range near $595M. That range preserves a 105% conversion ratio. The conversion ratio ranks among the strongest in the defense peer set.

Two questions separate base-case from bull-case. Can naval defense revenue recognition accelerate as Columbia-class funding lands and CVN-75 overhaul milestones clear? Does ground defense recover from its negative end-market guide as IFPC missile system production rates ramp? The risk on both sides is mechanism-driven rather than demand-driven. Curtiss-Wright carries 37M diluted shares and $957M of senior notes at low single-digit coupons. The pension sits in net periodic benefit position, releasing cash into the parent balance sheet rather than absorbing it.

A filing on August 6, 2026 anchors the framework. Sales growth in the high single digits with margin above 19% defines the operating envelope. Adjusted diluted EPS in the mid-teens anchors the earnings range. Free cash flow near $595M preserves conversion discipline. Capital allocation continues to scale with earnings rather than substitute for them. A subsequent disclosure in mid-August detailed adoption of a Rule 10b5-1 trading plan for $100M of repurchases. That plan drew down an authorization that stood at $390M after the prior mid-August plan. The investment debate here is whether mid-teens EPS compounding persists into 2027 as ground defense recovers.
