Astrotech Q3 FY2026 Earnings: The Quarter Was Small, the Pipeline Is the Quarter

Published August 14, 202624 min read·TickerFile Research · ASTROTECH Corp (ASTC)

Astrotech's third fiscal quarter looked, on paper, like a quieter version of an already small print: revenue of $343 thousand, down 35.8% from $534 thousand a year ago, a gross margin that fell from 44% to 20%, and a net loss of $3.77 million against a $3.63 million loss a year ago. The headline frames it as a micro-cap drifting, which is the read almost no one will question. Look at the customer disclosure underneath, and the quarter tells a more specific story. One customer accounted for substantially all of the $99 thousand in revenue management separately identifies as the third-quarter component; for the year-ago quarter, two customers accounted for substantially all of the $534 thousand. Strip the customer count and the company sold into a single name this quarter, and the gross margin moved against a revenue line that included a negative grant re-test adjustment. That is a real disclosure, not a noise complaint, and the quarter's most honest reading is the one management did not lead with: the pipeline of TRACER 1000 trace-detector placements - 37 locations in 16 countries, up from roughly 34 a year ago - is the asset the print is supposed to convert, and Q3 is the quarter that test showed it has not yet.

The balance sheet makes the urgency concrete. Cash of $2.68 million and short-term investments of $3.90 million at March 31, 2026 sit against $11.17 million of operating cash used in the nine-month period - an annualizing $14.9 million burn. The runway is short enough that, at a $15.65 million market capitalization on the $8.90 close, the equity is essentially the option on whether the placements convert. The ECAC/EU G1 aviation-security approval the TRACER 1000 received on May 11, 2026, the first TSA-approved sale through Intuitive Research in April 2025, the DHS Science & Technology R&D contract, the GSA IT-70 schedule, and a Vietnam narcotics-deployment sale last June are the named milestones. The most consequential disclosure in the room is not in the income statement. It is in the Note on continued listing: the market value of Astrotech's listed securities has fallen below $5 million at points, putting the Nasdaq minimum bid price and minimum market value of listed securities requirements under active SEC review. A reverse-stock-split-free path back above the threshold is the most concrete near-term clock, and management has not yet framed one.
