Ashland's third quarter is the cleanest operating print the company has posted in a year, and the market largely missed the point. $497 million in sales, up 7% year over year on volume gains in every reportable segment, with adjusted EBITDA of $109 million at a 21.9% margin - a year-over-year decline of just 4% that management attributes to lingering effects of lower production rates earlier in the fiscal year, not to weakening demand. GAAP diluted earnings per share landed at $0.35, swinging from a $(16.21) loss a year ago, but the year-ago line was a function of a $706 million non-cash goodwill impairment that buried a $40 million operating profit in two segments. The 2026 quarter is what a normal Ashland quarter looks like, and the leverage profile now matches it: net leverage of 2.4x - back inside the company's long-term target range - with $520 million still authorized for repurchases under a $1 billion evergreen program that took no action this year.
The segments told two stories. Life Sciences grew double-digit, with 11% sales growth and adjusted EBITDA up 11% to $60 million at a 33% margin, on broad pharma demand across injectables, excipients, and the company's "innovate" portfolio. Personal Care added 5% with 29% margins, led by biofunctional actives and microbial protection. Specialty Additives grew 4% but with adjusted EBITDA off 23% on production carryover. Intermediates' merchant sales improved on North American EV battery NMP demand - a small but real tailwind from the energy-storage buildout. The base business is performing; what is missing is operating leverage, and management's own fourth-quarter guidance is the lever they expect to pull.
The trade for the next quarter is the one the market has not yet priced. Ashland is on track for full-year fiscal 2026 sales of $1,835–$1,870 million and adjusted EBITDA of $385–$400 million, both reaffirmed, while adjusted EPS growth was cut to low-to-mid-single digits from mid-to-high on a higher tax rate. The company is asking investors to look through the tax-driven EPS reset to the sequential operating improvement already in motion - plant operations improved during the quarter, profitability increased sequentially, and fourth-quarter benefits from pricing realization are expected to compound. At a reference price of $73.35, the equity trades at roughly 11x the midpoint of guided full-year adjusted EBITDA with net leverage of 2.4x and a $520 million unused buyback. The question is not whether the operating print beats or misses - it printed in line - but whether the second-half operating leverage and the unspent buyback authorization combine to make the equity rerate by year-end.
