The Andersons, Inc. delivered a second quarter in which one half of the company produced the best results of its history while the other half of the company fell further behind. The Maumee, Ohio-based agribusiness and renewable-fuels company, led by chief executive Bill Krueger and chief financial officer Brian Valentine, posted second-quarter net income attributable to The Andersons of $56.6 million, or $1.65 per diluted share, and adjusted net income of $74 million, or $2.15 per diluted share, both up sharply from a $7.9 million / $0.23 prior-year quarter. The picture looks dramatically different by segment. Renewables earned $88.4 million of adjusted pretax income on $102.6 million of adjusted EBITDA, a record second quarter, lifted by strong ethanol margins, finalized Renewable Volume Obligations that opened merchandising opportunities, and the first $24 million of 45Z producer tax credits flowing through the income statement. Agribusiness earned $20.3 million of adjusted pretax income, a modest improvement on the prior year's $16.8 million, with fertilizer margin gains and a positive merchandising environment partially offset by lower volumes and weaker grain-asset earnings tied to a mixed eastern Corn Belt growing season. Adjusted EBITDA reached $140.3 million, more than double the $65.2 million in the year-ago quarter. The market paid attention on earnings day, sending the shares up roughly 6.6% to $74.48 the next session, but they have since drifted back to $65.61 - a level that values the company at roughly 12.7 times trailing earnings, 10.9 times forward, and roughly 6.8 times trailing adjusted EBITDA. The central question this report addresses is whether the Renewables record is durable enough to lift the whole enterprise, or whether the structural challenges in Agribusiness - and the unresolved Skyland covenant waiver - will keep the multiple anchored where it is.
