Albemarle Q2 2026 Earnings: The Lithium Price Recovery That Rebuilt the P&L

Published August 12, 202614 min read·TickerFile Research · ALBEMARLE CORP (ALB)

Albemarle is the specialty chemicals company that bet its balance sheet on lithium for electric-vehicle batteries, then spent two brutal years paying for that wager. In 2024 and 2025 it posted back-to-back GAAP losses of $11.20 and $5.76 per diluted share as lithium prices collapsed, halted construction on multiple plants, put idled capacity into care and maintenance, and sold its refining catalysts business to raise cash. Its shares touched a 52-week low of $71.25 in September 2025. The second quarter of fiscal 2026 is the other side of that cycle, and it arrived with force. Lithium prices recovered, Albemarle's realized lithium price jumped 60% from a year earlier to $19.53 per kilogram, and the company swung from a loss to GAAP diluted EPS of $3.52 - with adjusted diluted EPS of $3.75 - on adjusted EBITDA that more than doubled to $858 million. Net income attributable to Albemarle totaled $480 million, and operating cash flow reached $710 million.

The quarter answers the question that dominated the past two years: whether Albemarle could survive a lithium bust. It has, and it came out the other side leaner - net debt at roughly half a turn of adjusted EBITDA, deleveraged in part by that catalysts sale and a ~$1.3 billion debt tender. The new question is whether this is a durable up-cycle or a price spike. Management expressed confidence in its own actions - raising the full-year Specialties outlook, cutting the capex plan to roughly $500 million, and saying the cost-and-productivity program is tracking to the high end of its $100 million to $150 million target. But the company's own full-year guidance is a wide, price-contingent band: adjusted EBITDA of roughly $0.9 billion to $1.0 billion if average lithium prices hold near the currently observed ~$10 per kilogram, rising to $4.2 billion to $4.4 billion if prices average the 2021-2025 trend of ~$30. The entire stock trades on which of those worlds is real, and the realized price already in the quarter ($19.53) sits well above the spot level the conservative scenario assumes.
