Applied Industrial Technologies Q3 FY2026 Earnings: Organic Growth Reaccelerates Across Both Segments

Applied Industrial Technologies reported a fiscal third quarter that answered the question that has hung over the industrial distribution complex for the better part of a year: is demand actually firming, or is growth only the arithmetic of acquisitions and inflation? The answer, in the quarter ended March 31, 2026, was that the underlying business accelerated. Net sales rose 7.3% to $1.251 billion, but the telling number is the 6.0% organic gain-excluding the 0.5% from acquisitions and 0.8% of favorable currency translation-the strongest organic expansion in recent quarters. Growth was led by the Engineered Solutions segment, up 9.3% organically, with the larger Service Center unit adding 4.2%. Management described April organic sales trending up high-single-digit percent year over year, with orders and the business funnel both favorable.

The quarter's bottom line was less clean than its top line, and the difference is worth stating precisely. Net income of $99.8 million was effectively flat with a year ago, and diluted earnings per share of $2.65 rose just 3.1%, even as operating income grew 6.6% to $137.9 million. Two items explain most of the gap: a higher effective tax rate of 26.2% versus 21.6% a year earlier-including $1.7 million ($0.05 per share) of non-routine discrete tax expense tied to prior-year tax return adjustments, plus a weaker research-and-development tax credit-and $5.6 million of LIFO inventory expense versus $2.2 million in the prior-year quarter, a pre-tax inflation headwind of $0.11 after tax. Strip those accounting items and the operating engine grew more than the reported EPS suggests.

The more consequential news was the outlook. Management raised its full-year fiscal 2026 guidance at the same time it announced a fresh 3.0-million-share repurchase authorization and a quarterly dividend of $0.51. Adjusted EPS guidance moved to $10.64 to $10.75 from $10.45 to $10.75, and organic sales-growth guidance rose to 3.8% to 4.2% from 2.5% to 4.0%. The company framed a Q4 that embeds the macro noise-geopolitical events, trade policy, and inflation-while pointing to a U.S. industrial backdrop it describes as increasingly positive. This is a distributor executing in a demand environment that has finally stopped getting worse, returning cash to shareholders and guiding to a stronger finish.
