C3.ai Fiscal Year 2026 Earnings: A Restructuring Reset Discounts the Shrinkage Before the Agentic-AI Return

Published August 12, 202616 min read·TickerFile Research · C3.ai, Inc. (AI)

C3.ai enters its next chapter as a smaller company with a sharper directive. In the fiscal year ended April 30, 2026, revenue contracted to $250.3 million, down 36% from $389.1 million the year before, after the business had already been teetering through a multi-quarter slowdown. The full-year loss from operations widened to $(498.5) million, and the company closed the books on an accumulated deficit of $1.8 billion. This was not a quarter management dressed up; the founder explicitly called the recent sales performance "entirely unacceptable, to the point of surreal" and said, "We are here to fix it." The fix is a restructuring approved in February that targets roughly $135 million in annualized cost savings, a refocused go-to-market, and the return of Thomas M. Siebel to the chief executive role.

The quarter's most decisive signal was capital, not revenue. Siebel resumed the role of Chief Executive Officer effective May 8, 2026, and separately put his own money behind the thesis, purchasing 6.17 million shares at $11.16 each, roughly $69 million into the stock. The cash and securities balance, which stood at $575.4 million on April 30, rose to $673 million by June 3 with that purchase included - a war chest that is substantial relative to the company's $1.65 billion market capitalization. A founder coming back to run a company and buying shares at the current price does not guarantee a turnaround, but it does concentrate the story: the value rests on whether the cost cuts reach profitability before the shrinking revenue base erodes the cash cushion away.

Investors are paying a growth-company multiple for a company that is currently shrinking. At about 6.6x trailing revenue and roughly 7.3x the fiscal 2027 guided midpoint of $225 million, the shares are priced for a stabilization and re-acceleration that the guidance itself has not yet promised - fiscal 2027 revenue is guided to $210-$240 million, below what the company just generated. The bull case is that the agentic-AI portfolio (C3 Code, C3 Generative AI, agent orchestration) finally converts the restructuring into operating leverage. The bear case is that the go-to-market is broken and the right-sizing is making a smaller company out of what was supposed to be a platform. Each quarter from here answers a piece of that.
