Argan Q1 FY2027: Record Profit Confirms the Power-Boom Story - the Premium to Peers Is the Open Question

Published August 12, 202616 min read·TickerFile Research · ARGAN INC (AGX)

Argan's first quarter arrived with the company in the middle of the most consequential order-book surge in its history: the gas-fired power buildout that data centers, electric vehicles, and the reshoring of manufacturing have triggered across the United States. The AI-driven demand for reliable, dispatchable electricity pulled Argan's consolidated backlog from roughly $1.4 billion a year ago to about $2.9 billion at fiscal 2026 year-end, and the company spent fiscal 2026 converting that pipeline into results - revenue up, margins up, and a cash balance that now tops $970 million with no debt.

The fiscal first quarter put the story on the board. Revenue of $290.95 million grew 50.2% year over year to a record, consolidated gross margin rose to 21.0% from 19.0%, and net income of $46.06 million more than doubled the prior-year quarter's $22.55 million, to $3.24 of GAAP diluted earnings per share from $1.60. Operating cash flow reached $113.4 million in a single quarter. Every segment grew, led by Industrial, which nearly doubled on pressure-vessel fabrication tied to a data-center customer.

The tension is not in the operating quarter - it is in the price. Argan shares roughly tripled between September 2025 and late June 2026, topping $800, and even after a pullback near 28% to about $579 the stock trades around 51x trailing and roughly 47x forward earnings - a premium to every large construction peer, several of which trade in the low-to-mid 20s on forward earnings. The market is paying an open-ended price for a supercycle that the operating numbers support but the valuation no longer discounts conservatively. What decides the thesis is whether the record backlog converts at current margins faster than new awards replenish it - the backlog actually ticked down this quarter - and whether the ~21% gross margin is the new run-rate or a project-mix high-water mark. What happened: the power-boom story produced its best quarter ever. What it means: the stock has now priced that outcome in advance, and the falsification test has moved from whether the boom is real to whether it was oversold at the top.
