Acacia Research Q2 2026 Earnings: Record Licensing Tucked Under a One-Time Write-off

Acacia Research arrived at its June quarter as a company in the middle of its longest-running transformation: converting a historical patent-licensing shop into a diversified acquirer and operators of industrial, energy and technology businesses, financed by a balance sheet that has collected roughly $334.6 million in cash, liquid securities and loans - and guided through a controlling shareholder in Starboard. There are two ways to read this quarter. The first is as a wash: GAAP net income of $47 thousand, earnings per share of essentially zero, and operating cash flow negative for the half. The second is the quarter. Total revenue rose 124% to $114.6 million, the Intellectual Property Operations booked its largest paid-up licensing quarter in years ($60.9 million, against $0.3 million a year earlier), and Benchmark recorded its strongest revenue quarter under Acacia ownership at $20.5 million. Adjusted net income was $12.8 million, or $0.13 a diluted share. The single item that buried the headline was a $30.9 million impairment of the legacy Life Sciences investment in MalinJ1, written to zero - a one-time charge against a portfolio Acacia bought in 2020 and has been monetizing ever since.

The rest of the story is what the company did with its money and its portfolio. The balance sheet carried $334.6 million of cash, cash equivalents, equity securities at fair value and loans receivable as of June 30 - $3.43 per share - with zero parent-company debt, an acquisition pipeline management calls active, and a book value of $557.0 million, or $5.71 per share. The stock closed at $4.62 on August 11, more than a dollar below that book value. The quarter answered one question and raised another: the operating and licensing engine can still generate a burst of revenue, but the market is paying a discount to the balance sheet while waiting for those assets - and that revived licensing - to convert into durable cash flow and further book-value compounding.
