Arbutus Q1 2026 Earnings: The LNP Payout Landed - Buybacks Replace the Burn

Published August 11, 202615 min read·TickerFile Research · Arbutus Biopharma Corp (ABUS)

Arbutus Biopharma is a clinical-stage infectious-disease company whose drug pipeline for chronic hepatitis B has not changed in years - but whose balance sheet just did, violently. For most of its public life, the investment case was a familiar biotech tragedy: a promising RNAi therapeutic (imdusiran) and an oral PD-L1 inhibitor (AB-101) marching through early trials while cash drained and a 57% workforce cut in 2025 shriveled the company. The thing that was supposed to save it - the decades-long patent war over the lipid nanoparticle (LNP) delivery technology beneath every mRNA vaccine - finally paid. In the first quarter, Arbutus recognized $178.7 million of license revenue from its share of the March settlement with Moderna, flipping a year-ago $24.5 million net loss into $169.7 million of net income - GAAP diluted EPS of $0.87. Then, after the quarter closed, the money actually landed and the story turned again: Arbutus received roughly $178 million in cash on July 8, expects a dividend from Genevant's parent this quarter, and announced it will return up to ~$230 million to shareholders through buybacks that could take the form of a Dutch auction tender offer.

The central tension is no longer whether the pipeline works - it is what this company now is. Roughly thirty cents of every dollar of the current ~$922 million market value sits in cash and near-cash, and management plans to hand back about a quarter of the whole company. That is an unusual posture for a biotech with no approved product, and it prices three things at once: the cash already banked, an unresolved Pfizer/BioNTech suit that could dwarf the Moderna settlement, and a hepatitis B pipeline still years from any product revenue. The Moderna payout was the validation this company spent a decade and its own operating losses pursuing. The buyback is management voting with real money that the rest - the Pfizer case and imdusiran - is worth more than the market now assigns. This report covers Q1 2026 financials and folds in the July settlement and capital-return developments that came after the quarter.
