Agilent arrived at its fiscal second quarter as a 40-billion-dollar laboratory-instruments franchise finishing its third straight year of recovery from a 2023 industry downcycle, now betting on a company-wide efficiency program - the "Ignite Operating System" - to turn mid-single-digit demand growth into outsized profit growth. There are two ways to read the quarter. The first reads as a beat across the board: revenue grew 10% reported - 6.3% on a core, constant-currency basis - to $1.83 billion, all three segments expanded operating margins year over year except a flat CrossLab, and management raised full-year guidance on revenue, margin, and earnings per share. The second read is the honest one: roughly four points of that 10% reported growth was simply foreign-exchange translation, and the year-ago earnings base was depressed by roughly $43 million of losses on equity securities and investment impairments that did not repeat. Strip the lens, and the quarter is a clean, well-executed mid-single-digit grower with accelerating operating leverage - not an acceleration in demand.
The operating-number story is the margin inflection. GAAP operating margin rose about four points to 21.7%; non-GAAP operating margin expanded 130 basis points year over year and 180 sequentially to 26.4% - the second straight large margin beat of the CEO's tenure. GAAP diluted EPS of $1.20 jumped 60% from a soft prior-year base; the more comparable non-GAAP EPS of $1.49 rose a still-solid 14% from $1.31. Management credited "broad-based strength across key end markets" and the Ignite program, and then did something quieter and more telling: it raised the full-year non-GAAP EPS midpoint by eight cents, the margin-expansion outlook by ten basis points, and the revenue outlook by thirty basis points at the midpoint. With the stock trading near the top of its 52-week range at roughly 24x forward earnings, Agilent is a wide-moat instruments franchise being asked to deliver margin-driven EPS growth in a moderate-demand environment - and this quarter, for the first time in the recovery, the margin engine demonstrably did the work.
